چکیده

The influence of beta-adrenoceptor-blockade on skeletal muscle was studied in ten healthy males with propranolol, atenolol and pindolol randomly given for 8 days each in a cross-over double blind test. After 7 days on each drug, muscle function was tested by an isokinetic dynamometer. Thermogenesis in biopsy samples taken from vastus lateralis muscle after a low grade exercise was studied after 8 days on each drug by direct calorimetry with a perfusion microcalorimeter. Before drug administration, a median heat production rate of 0.67 mW/g of muscle was measured. This value was significantly reduced by 25% during propranolol, but no significant change was found during atenolol or pindolol administration. Peak torque decline during isokinetic endurance test changed significantly in knee flexor but not in extensor muscles, from 15% to 27% after propranolol and from 15% to 23% after pindolol. Maximum dynamic strength was unaltered. Our data suggest that blockade of sympathetic beta 2-receptors decreases thermogenesis in human skeletal muscle and impairs isokinetic endurance.

Beta-adrenoceptor-mediated responsiveness of human internal mammary artery

The internal mammary artery (IMA) is currently the preferred conduit for myocardial revascularization. However, pre-operative vasospasm and a hypoperfusion state during maximal exercise may limit its use as a bypass graft. The mechanism of spasm has not been clearly defined. Since β-adrenoceptor activation plays a major role in vasorelaxation, the present study was carried out to investigate th...

Beta2-adrenoceptor agonist fenoterol enhances functional repair of regenerating rat skeletal muscle after injury.

Beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonists such as fenoterol are anabolic in skeletal muscle, and because they promote hypertrophy and improve force-producing capacity, they have potential application for enhancing muscle repair after injury. No previous studies have measured the beta(2)-adrenoceptor population in regenerating skeletal muscle or determined whether fenoterol can improve functional recovery i...

Hydro-ethanolic Extract of Portulaca oleracea Affects Beta-adrenoceptors of Guinea Pig Tracheal Smooth Muscle

The stimulatory effect of the extract of Portulaca oleracea (P. olerace) on β-adrenoceptor of tracheal smooth muscle was examined. To examine β-adrenoceptor stimulatory effect, concentration response curve to isoprenaline was obtained in pre-contracted tracheal smooth muscle in the presence of three concentrations of aqueous-ethanolic extract, propranolol and saline. Values of EC50 (the effecti...

Effects of Buthus eupeus Venom on Neuromuscular Transmission on Striated Muscle In Vitro

In this study, effects of Buthus eupeus venom on chick biventer cervices nerve-muscle preparation were investigated by twitch tension method. The venom, at 1.3 ?g/ml, increased contractile responses in indirect stimulations. These effects were milder in direct muscle stimulations. It also caused significant enhancement in postjunctional sensitivity as assessed by responses to exogenous acetylch...
